Résumé : |
"Finnegans Wake - Suite Of Affections" - named because of a phrase on page 432 of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake: ’to share our hard suite of affections with thee’.
This is my suite of affections. I've asked various actors to speak and record extracts that I have chosen from James Joyce's work, to which I then composed music. I've been delving into this work since my late twenties and mostly thrown back, but there are pages in my view that light up world literature like flares, only to be lost again in the darkness soon after. I have chosen fifteen pieces, performed by Aidan Gillen (2, 3, 7), Barry McGovern (5, 8,12-14), Caitríona O'Leary (6), Derbhle Crotty (4, 6), Thibaud Empey - boy singer (8), Isobel Mahon (1,9,11), Morgan Crowley - sung and spoken (10), Olwen Fouéré (15). The performances bring out the great humour in Joyce’s work that you hear with the intonation unique to Dublin and the music ranges through many styles without blinking an eyelid. |
