Résumé : | This article argues that the dominance of the theory of modernisation - that growing economic integration and interdependence between states would diminish ethnic attachments and lead to political unity - contributed to the division between nationalists and unionists over membership of the European Economic Community (EEC). However, these modernising assumptions have become discredited. The tendency of closer European integration seems to be towards increasing the cultural and political importance of the regions, rather than the creation of new and larger states |
