Résumé : | History writing in the long eighteenth century was shaped by the two golden age myths, one secular (a Milesian civilisation lasting until 1169), the other Christian (the island of saints and scholars). The viking incursions and subsequent urban settlements broke the symmetry of these myths, but, for eighteenth-century antiquaries, they also prefigured the coming of the Anglo-Normans and the trauma of colonisation, except that in this case the Irish cause of 'virtuous liberty' was triumphant. This article examines narratives of the Viking period in the work of a number of antiquaries, focusing in particular on the treatment of Brian Boru, the Battle of Clontarf, and the myth of Brian as the wisest and most pious high king of Ireland, which would make him a key figure in romantic nationalist histories of the following century |
