Résumé : | Henry Maxwell (1669-1730) has been identified among those Irish Protestants developing the 'commonwealth' tradition of Whiggism in the early eighteenth century, and also as the author of one of the first tracts arguing in favour of an Anglo-Irish Union. The discovery of four letters written by him to James Stanhope, between 1703 and 1714, not only dispels recent scepticism as to his authorship of the Essay upon an union..., and provides explicit evidence linking him with English 'commonwealth' Whigs, but also casts light on his political ideas and connexions. Using these letters and other evidence, this article reconstructs Maxwell's biography and re-examines his writings in the context of his life, in particular the significant degree of consistency in beliefs and conduct, characterised by a pragmatic appreciation of the nature of Anglo-Irish governance, that he showed |
