Résumé : | This essay examines the use of the term diograis - 'zeal, devotion' - in Aogan O Rathaille's 'An Aisling'. O Rathaille is the first major poet of the eighteenth-century in Irish to articulate a Jacobite perspective. This poem exploits the semantic range of diograis in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Irish to express 'pietas', the reciprocal feeling of reverence and responsibility that informs the ideal relationship between king and country |
