Résumé : | James Barry painted Ossian only once. He included a portrait of the Celtic bard in his Elysium and Tartarus, or the State of Final Retribution. Commentators, however, have noted Ossianic derivations in one prominent sequence of Barry's images, and proposed instructive comparisons with others. This article examines Barry's original, but anomalous use of Ossian. It assesses the claims for direct derivation of Ossianic material elsewhere in his works. The essay argues that Barry uses Ossian and Ossianic parallel imagery both to produce a harmonious vision of British and Irish antiquity, and as an innovative means of expressing overwhelming personal feeling |
