Résumé : | This article identifies a series of articles published in The Calcutta Gazette between 10 March and 28 July 1785 as the work of Charles Johnstone, the Irish author of Chrystal, or the Adventures of a Guinea (1760-65), and other works of fiction. Writing in India under the pseudonym of 'Oneiropolos', Johnstone adopts the narrative persona of a naïve 'Teague' whose fanciful descriptions of a balloon voyage to the moon carry distinctly satirical overtones in relation to Anglo-Indian society of the time. This article provides an edited version of Johnstone's text, so far his only known work to have emerged from an eighteen-year career in the burgeoning newspaper world of India |
