Résumé : | In the years after the Treaty of Limerick (1691), thousands of Irish females of various ages and social strata formed part of the mass exodus of Irish jacobite officers and soldiers who emigrated to France and converged around James II's court-in-exile at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. This article examines the experiences of these females émigrés, particularly the dependents of Irish jacobite officers, many of whom lost their menfolk in military engagements soon after their arrival in France, and explores the strategies they deployed to survive, adapt and, in some instances, thrive in their host society |
