Résumé : | The author is the son of the distinguished historian Nicholas Mansergh, author of the Irish Question and more recently The Unresolved Question. Having inherited from his father "a broad anti-imperialist outlook", Martin Mansergh who describes himself as "a democratic Irish republican" was special adviser on Northern Ireland to the Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey and to his successor Albert Reynolds. As such he was a central figure in the Irish government's peace initiative which culminated in the IRA's and loyalist's ceasefire of 1994. In this article he puts the peace process in the wider context of Irish history |
