| Résumé : | As Stephen Dedalus listens to the English priest's pronunciation he frets under the shadow of the language of the conqueror and determines to remake it. The scene expresses the predicament of Irish writers as they tried to create a separate literature in English. They were aware, also, of the steady erosion of Irish culture, of the very forces that made them different. In order to make a distinctive literature they recorded Irish (Hiberno-English) speech, drew upon the Irish past and remained open to influences from abroad. They lost a language but made up for that loss by creating an alternative language |
