In 1887, the German sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies published his work Gemeinschaft Und Gesellschaft in which he developed scientific concepts still useful today in understanding how societies develop and change over time.
The Gemeinschaft is typified by village life with a strong emphasis on family life. The land and the people's relation to it is an essential element in the social structure of the Gemeinschaft. People own the land in common with one another and work together. There are no class differentiations within this community.
The Gessellschaft is typified by city life. Here, in a capitalistic setting, people work closely together but without the mutual aid characteristic of the Gemeinschaft. Work is ruled by the imperatives of capitalism and is thereby motivated purely by pecuniary considerations. In the Gesellschaft individuals focus on their own personal interest and not on the welfare of the community
