Article reproduit dans le numéro spécial hors série des Etudes Irlandaises en hommage à Paul Brennan, originellement publié dans Revue Française de Civilisation Britannique, vol 9 n°1 (1996). The British and French declaration of war on Gemrany on 3 September 1939 had been preceded in the same year, in early January, by another declaration of war, that of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) on Britain, because of its refusal to withdraw from Northern Ireland to allow for the unification of the island. With no response from London the IRA began its war in England by bombing seven targets on 16 January. A short time later, on 1 February, a German agent, Oskar Pfaus, arrived in Ireland to liaise between the IRA and Abwehr II. In the same month the Irish Prime Minister, Eamon De Valera, stated that in case of war Ireland would remain neutral. In May, both the Dublin government and the most senior members of the Irish Catholic hierarchy warned London against any attempt to introduce conscription in Northern Ireland |
