Résumé : | Frank McGuinness's Gates of Gold (2002), a naturalistic drama set on a split stage representing the living room and bedroom of a sophisticated Dublin apartment, uses spatial metaphors to explore issues important in both Irish drama and Irish culture: the relationship of public and private space to gay sexuality; the links and gaps in a long-term sexual partnership; and the intersection of stage space and Irish place. The play brings a gay couple to center stage, highlighting the right of gays to occupy various Irish space, including Irish theatre space, and the final dissolve of the screen between the set's two rooms provides a visual image of the permeability of borders |
