Résumé : | This article offers a historical survey of the use of early medieval Gaelic culture as an instrument of political rhetoric and national assertiveness. Such manipulation resulted in the misrepresentation of the nature of that culture, due to its adaptation to modern needs. Nineteenth century representations perfectly illustrate this phenomenon, in particular through the stress laid on the cult of the hero and the female image of Ireland. The time has come to break through the hedge of prejudices which still surrounds parts of the history and literature of that period |
