Résumé : | Thomas Kilroy was born in 1934 in Callan, County Kilkenny. At University College Dublin, he studied English Language and Literature. After graduating from UCD, he became first a schoolteacher then a headmaster and afterwards returned to University College Dublin as a lecturer in 1964. In 1959, he wrote a controversial article entitled "Groundwork for an Irish Theatre", in which he called for a renaissance of Irish drama. His novel, The Big Chapel, was nominated for the Booker Prize in 1971. His dramatic works are reflections on Ireland, the human condition and the essence of theatre. He rejects realistic drama and exposes the artificial nature of performance, which he connects to masks and forms of playacting in everyday life. The following interview was given in Caen in November, 27, 1997 |
