Résumé : | This paper sets out to examine the role and function of Hiberno-English in the following plays by Marina Carr : The Mai, Portia Coughlan, By the Bogs of Cats, On Raftery's Hill and Ariel, all of wich make intensive and deliberate use of the Irish Midlands version of the dialect, in a way that resembles the work of other Irish writers, but to a much greater extent than heretofore. The usage varies slightly from play to play, and Carr has virtually abandoned it in her 2006 play, Woman and Scarecrow. The HE idioms used are found not to be taken from the special languages of Irish travellers, as some critics believe, but the reference to tinkers is seen to denote primal passions and myth. An examination of given names of the characters by generation reveals the abandonment of tradition in this respect also |
