Résumé : | Few early nineteenth-century pugilists can be as well commemorated as Donnelly. He has been honoured with three biographical studies and by the erection of a stone monument. Yet reliable details regarding Donnelly's life and career are limited. Instead, we are presented from the beginning with a series of impressions, beliefs and near-legends. This article seeks to collate what surviving evidence there is regarding Donnelly's life, and, at the same time, examine the differing perceptions of Donnelly and the varying interpretations of his feats over the two centuries since his death. Ultimately, it aims to explain why a boxer of such markedly modest achievements during his lifetime has enjoyed such an enduring posthumous fame |
