Résumé : | This article begins with a brief narrative of the Abyssian crisis , followed by an examination of the ways in which the crisis aroused domestic interest. The main body of this study shows that Irish public discourse transcended partisan political divisions and clerical influence during the crisis to envisage the Free State not as a passive or outside observer but, rather, as an active player in the global community. It argues that a broader, international political discourse, largely free from clerical moralising, lay under the surface of Irish party politics. Far from insularity, the Abyssian crisis highlights a surprising level of interest amongst the Irish reading public in the wider world |
