Résumé : | In Madoc: A Mystery, Paul Muldoon is less interested in the products and end results of power than he is in the process and methods by which such power comes into being and is asserted. Indeed, power and possession are fitting counterparts within this wild epic, and yet their machinations are hazy and origins are obscured. Throughout Madoc: A Mystery, Muldoon considers the repercussions of imperial "possession" at the same time as he explores the social implications behind such a blurred legacy. A close attention to detail uncovers a repeated discourse that coalesces questions of legacy, ownership, and identity the language of heraldry. Heraldic terms and images litter the poem's pages, and Muldoon is careful in his blazon, making detailed inquiries not simply into complacent notions of traditions or antiquity, but also into the construction of a stable, permanent, and yet ultimately specious, line of descent |
