Résumé : | This article considers the failed attempt to reconcile unionism and nationalism in Northern Ireland in March 1922. It reassesses the balance of forces on the unionist side who were in favour of, or opposed to, the March Peace Pact and argues that a belligerent and obstructionist position was not an automatic or inevitable unionist response. Evidence that suggests a more diverse range of attitudes on this spectrum is considered against a background of violence, political instability and the political strategy of Michael Collins. |
