Résumé : | Sarah Bernhardt's 1891 Melbourne season marked a key moment in Australian cultural history, a moment when modernity triumphed over modernism. Modernity is taken to mean the technological innovations that refigured contemporary paradigms of time and space and radically repositioned the loci of production and consumption. Modernism is taken to mean the aesthetic protest against modernity, the heroic but doomed resistance to immediacy and to the material. It is not that Bernhardt's season constituted an epistemic shift in Australian culture; rather, it drew attention to those forces associated with modernity that were inherent in Australian society and that were to prove hostile to modernism |
