| Résumé : | The article looks at Lady Gregory's translations of four Molière plays into the Kiltartan dialect, and contends that they are part of a cultural battle Gregory is fighting, a complex contribution to the Abbey's project of constructing a national identity. While promoting Kiltartan as target language for the translation of some of the greatest pieces in the French classic repertoire is a means of contesting the hegemony of Standard English, specific translation choices also enable Lady Gregory to appropriate Molière's social criticism and to bring it to bear on the changing Ireland of her time. However, she limits the impact of her gesture of appropriation by shunning to expose her language to the full force of the foreign language as foreign body |
